The name "La Jolla" (which means "the jewel" in Spanish) is a fitting description of this coastal area of San Diego. As one of the top 10 travel destinations in California, it receives a lot of attention from many different kinds of people.
One of several picturesque beaches in La Jolla. La Jolla is the location for some of the best (and most scenic) beaches in Southern California. Scuba divers are especially attracted to these beaches due to excellent diving conditions and the prominence of many sea caves and cliffs in the area. If you like to snorkel, La Jolla Cove is one of the great snorkel beaches in San Diego. The area tide pools are a terrific place to search for small marine life. In fact, the only other places comparable in San Diego for this kind of activity are found along the Point Loma coastline or below the seaside cliffs of Torrey Pines.

A young seagull sits on the edge of a rock overlooking the ocean. One of the beaches here is called the "Children's Pool" and it is a great place where you can take pictures of seals. The harbor seals love to beach themselves at this location and can sometimes be seen in large numbers.

There is also a La Jolla business district which is in an area known as University City. This area adjoins the University of California, San Diego campus (UCSD) and has grown dramatically over the years.
View from the top of Mt. Soledad looking north towards University City. There is a spectacular 360 degree view of the entire San Diego region and the Pacific Ocean from this hilltop location which is another reason why I have named this one of the top 10 travel destinations in California.

This is an intersection in the University City area of La Jolla. Many wealthy people call La Jolla their home and there are a number of large mansions in the hills overlooking the ocean and sea cliffs. The view of San Diego from atop La Jolla's Mount Soledad is unmatched. The Torrey Pines Golf Resort is located here. The Buick Invitational Tournament is played there each February and is attended by some of the best golfers in the world. There are many reasons why La Jolla can be considered one of the

in the State of California. If you are in the San Diego area, don't miss the opportunity to visit this town. It is truly "the jewel" of the Southern California coastline and is a great place to spend some time in.
