While there are many beautiful San Diego beaches, no stretch of Southern California coastline is more beautiful or photogenic than that found near the town of La Jolla. If the lighting is right, you can capture some stunning landscape photos while enjoying the cool ocean breezes of this coastal town. The San Diego tourism bureau is well aware of the many charms that this area offers to visitors and locals alike.

Sea birds of all types (seagulls, pelicans, egrets and more) La Jolla is an upscale community located about 12 miles north of downtown San Diego. Not only do human visitors like this scenic location, but many harbor seals and sea lions also call La Jolla home. Every day you can view dozens of seals and sea lions basking in the sun at Children's Pool Beach. It is a perfect spot to take some close-up marine wildlife pictures. For those who enjoy snorkeling or scuba diving, La Jolla Cove (just a short distance north of Children's Pool Beach) offers clear and calm water along with a number of shoreline sea caves to explore. None of the other San Diego beaches offer as much as this stretch of coastline does. Scripps Park sits above La Jolla Cove and features a large grassy area with picnic tables and spectacular ocean views.

The mild mediterranean-type climate allows lots of colorful coastal flowers to grow here along with large areas of succulent ice plant (which blooms with pink, magenta or purple flowers of it's own at various times of the year). There are numerous rocky cliffs and bluffs to explore along with picturesque shoreline coves where one can find some privacy and solitude. There are also several tide pools where you can view small fish, sea anenomes, crabs and more. It is the perfect location for taking some beautiful landscape pictures of the beach and coastline.

Just up the hill from the beach areas and Scripps Park you will find lots of restaurants and small shops along with art galleries and boutiques. Automobile parking spaces can be difficult to find on weekends although there are paid parking garages available. But during the weekdays, you can usually find plenty of free parking on the street. Holiday and weekend parking can be a problem at all San Diego beaches. But persevering until you find one definitely has it's rewards.

There are other wonderful San Diego beaches to visit and explore. Places such as Torrey Pines State Beach, Mission Beach (which features a boardwalk and roller coaster), and Coronado Beach. But as a photographer, I have to say that none of the others equal La Jolla in scenic beauty.
