Take great pictures of Las Vegas from the top of the Stratosphere.
Capturing aerial pictures of Las Vegas from the top of the Stratosphere Tower is a great reason to visit this tall desert city landmark. You get a 360 degree view of the city from the outdoor observation deck. It is an even better view at night when all of Las Vegas lights up.

View of the world famous Las Vegas Strip as seen from the top of the tower. This photo was taken in 1998. Since then, many more resort hotels have been built further enhancing the view.

Vertical shot of the Las Vegas Strip as seen during the day. Although it is still an impressive view, it becomes almost magical after dark.

Looking out over the city of Las Vegas. The Hilton Hotel is in the foreground. It is not located on the Strip.
The Stratosphere Tower rises 1,149 feet in the air making it one of the tallest structures in the United States. If you are brave enough (or perhaps the word is foolish?), you can try your hand at three different thrill rides found at the top. The "Big Shot" (which I did ride back in 1998) is billed as being the highest thrill ride in the world. When the tower first opened in 1996, there was also a roller coaster at the top called "High Roller". I wanted to ride the coaster in 1998 but it was closed to due high winds (not uncommon in the desert). The ride was permanently closed at the end of 2005. However, two more thrill attractions have taken it's place. One of these dangles it's riders over the edge of the tower while spinning them around. It is not for the faint of heart.
The Stratosphere Tower is one of the tallest structures in the United States. In this photograph, you can see the roller coaster track circling the top of the tower. The pointed spire on top is the "Big Shot" ride. Riders are catapulted upward to the top of the spire - then slowly drop back down.
Here is a closer view of the "Big Shot" ride. You can also see the roller coaster track which circled the top.
This was the loading area for the "High Roller" roller coaster. Unfortunately, it was closed in December of 2005. No more pictures of Las Vegas can be taken from this vantage point.

Another view of Las Vegas from the roller coaster loading area. Downtown can be seen in the distance.
The city really lights up at night and is awesome to view from such a height. You can capture sharp, detailed night pictures of Las Vegas from this stationary platform much more easily than you could if you were photographing from a helicopter or airplane. You don't need to use a real fast shutter speed or a high ISO setting (especially if you use a tripod).

Downtown Las Vegas glows in the distance. Several new skyscrapers are planned for the downtown area including one over 800 feet high. These new towers will mean even more opportunities to capture great pictures of Las Vegas. It is an ever-expanding city.

The city of Las Vegas continues to grow at a fast rate. The population of the area will soon top two million people.
The city of Las Vegas had already grown quite large by 1998, and has even more lights to photograph today. The lights of the city seem to stretch to infinity and make for some potentially impressive photos. The contrast of city skyline pictures taken from day to night is striking (as seen in the pictures on this page). The dry desert setting completely disappears at night and is replaced by a fantasyland of lights.
Taking quality
pictures of Las Vegas
(by day or by night) is not difficult to achieve. There is an abundance of interesting subject matter to photograph. But viewing and taking pictures of Las Vegas from the top of the Stratosphere Tower allows for a photographic experience which you won't find anywhere else. The only problem which might be difficult for some to overcome is having a fear of heights.

A little bit of snow can be seen on the distant desert mountains.
