The River is an outdoor
Palm Springs shopping center
with extensive water features.

Most visitors to this desert area of Southern California like to include a Palm Springs shopping trip in their travel plans. The two most prominent outdoor shopping malls in the Coachella Valley are "The Gardens on El Paseo" and "The River" (which is actually located in the city of Rancho Mirage). While both outdoor shopping centers can be quite uncomfortable to walk around during the hot summertime daylight hours, they are perfect shopping locations for the cooler evening hours. And they are ideal shopping destinations during the mild winter months.

There are a number of excellent restaurants located here at "The River". The most visible is The Cheesecake Factory which is surrounded by water in the mall courtyard area. Other top flight eateries include P.F. Chang's China Bistro, Fleming's Prime Steakhouse, The Yard House restaurant, and Babe's Bar-B-Que. Any one of them can add the perfect finishing touch to a Palm Springs shopping day or evening.

Restaurant lights begin to turn on as dusk approaches.

For those who crave something sweet while browsing the outdoor mall, there is a Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop here and also a Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory store. Border's Books & Music used to be located here in the main courtyard but is now gone since the company went under financially. It is not yet known what will replace it. After a day of Palm Springs shopping and dining, you can relax and catch a movie at the Cinemark Century Theater located here.

Water runs throughout the shopping center and adds a tropical flavor to it. Even though the Palm Springs weather can be quite harsh at times (upwards of 120 degrees in the summer is not unheard of), The River mall definitely has a tropical desert oasis feel to it. If you visit here during those hot summer months and find that even the evenings are too warm for your taste, you can always head a few miles east on Highway 111 to the air conditioned Westfield Shopping Center Mall in Palm Desert. No matter where you go, the Palm Springs shopping experience is a good one.
