There are many excellent
Palm Springs resorts but none
are better than the JW Marriott.

Frequent travelers know that there are a number of excellent Palm Springs resorts to choose from in the area. However, there is one place which stands out far above all of the others - the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa. It is actually located in the nearby city of Palm Desert (the cities of the Coachella Valley all seem to run together without visible boundaries). The Palm Desert Marriott is a huge complex and features a large and spectacular 8-story open atrium in the hotel lobby. Gondola boats ferry hotel guests from the inside of the main lobby to areas around the resort. Just outside the atrium lobby are four beautiful swimming pools and there are also lakes and lagoons all over the property (which covers 450 acres). It is one of the largest resorts in the southwestern United States.

Waterways and lush tropical landscaping define the Palm Desert Marriott.

Waterfalls cascade down both sides of a gondola
boat dock in the main lobby of the hotel.

Of all the various Palm Springs resorts, this one has a decidedly tropical feel to it. The hotel lobby features exotic tropical birds (such as parrots, macaws and cockatoos) and tall indoor palm trees. The photos of the lobby on this page were taken in 1994 and most of the outside photos were taken in 2003. The indoor atrium waterfalls shown are no longer there. The Palm Desert Marriott lobby was recently remodeled and now features a larger boat dock area. It is very nice, but I do miss seeing and hearing the cascading waterfalls - especially since water is such a big part of this resort.

Another look at the waterfalls which used to be in the atrium lobby. It is still a grand lobby but the waterfalls added something extra to it.

There are four swimming pools on the property and also two of the finest Palm Desert golf courses to be found (which were designed by Ted Robinson). For those tennis enthusiasts, the hotel offers a total of 20 tennis courts to play on. Of these, fifteen are hard surface courts, three are clay courts, and two are stadium grass courts. Racquet Magazine ranked the Palm Desert Marriott one of the "Top 100 Resorts in the World" - very high praise indeed. It certainly is a jewel among the many Palm Springs resorts in the area.

You can visit the resort during the day (without being a hotel guest) and take some pictures of the beautiful tropical desert landscape. There is a hotel parking garage where you pay a small fee to park your car if you just want to see the hotel lobby or the lush surrounding landscape. There used to be some free outside parking lot areas near the garage, but I imagine that is no longer the case. The hotel features restaurants also including a Japanese steakhouse. The JW Marriott Resort is located on Country Club Drive in Palm Desert not far from the famous Palm Desert shopping district on El Paseo Drive. There are few resorts anywhere (not just Palm Springs resorts) which can match it in overall charm and appeal.
