When you think of Hawaii attractions, you automatically think of gorgeous Hawaiian beaches, swaying palm trees, warm and crystal clear ocean water, and perhaps a island landmark such as Diamond Head on Oahu. You might also think of activities such as surfing or snorkeling. But you might overlook one of the best attractions of all if you miss out on seeing Waimea Canyon.
The view of Waimea Canyon in all directions is awe-inspiring.
View of another part of Waimea Canyon. Mark Twain called Waimea Canyon the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" and for good reason. It resembles in appearance the much larger Grand Canyon in Arizona but includes a spectrum of color (green) not seen in the more famous national landmark. The canyon is 10 miles in length and about a mile wide and it has a depth of more than 3,600 feet.
The many colors of beautiful Waimea Canyon.
A closer view of the many different colors and shades that As you drive along the rim of the canyon on Waimea Canyon Road, there are several viewpoints which offer incredible views and opportunities to take beautiful landscape pictures. If you are adventurous, you can hike one of the many hiking trails in the canyon area. Great photo opportunities expand exponentially when exploring these trails.
A mountain goat can be seen in the center of this photograph. Near the end of the canyon is Koke'e Lodge which is a nice place to stop and eat. Right next door to the lodge is the Koke'e Museum where you can learn all about the canyon's history. Continuing on past the lodge will bring you to another one of the many
unique Hawaii attractions on this island - the Kalalau Valley lookout point
(known as Pu'u o kila lookout). The view of this large lush valley leading down to the ocean is breathtaking. Waimea Canyon is a special place which is not to be missed.
