There are a couple of ways to see the Fern Grotto. The easiest way is to take a guided boat tour on the Wailua River up to a boat dock, then walk a short distance through scenic jungle-like foliage to the grotto. You can also rent a kayak and paddle your way up the river to the dock if you prefer to.
Docking area for the Waialeale Boat Tour on the Wailua River. The grotto is a large natural amphitheater with a recessed cave which has ferns growing upside down from the ceiling of the cave opening. This spot has been a favorite wedding location of many couples for a number of years.

View of the grotto from a different angle. If you choose to take the guided boat tour, you can enjoy some Hawaiian music and entertainment during your boat ride. Then, once at the grotto, you can listen while the musicians sing the "Hawaiian Wedding Song" to you as you stand among the ferns.
