Many photographers (both amateur and professional) enjoy taking city skyline photographs. San Diego city skyline pictures are easily obtained from several different vantage points around the city. And each location offers many interesting potential photographic compositions.
View of the San Diego skyline at dusk as seen from Coronado Island. Coronado Island is far and away the most popular location from which to photograph San Diego's downtown buildings. Another good spot to set up your tripod and capture some skyline "magic" is Harbor Island (near the airport). Shelter Island is also near the airport and features a few hotels and some spectacular views of the city - another great spot for pictures of the San Diego skyline.
This night photo of the skyline was taken near the Coronado Ferry Landing.

Because of the city's location near the water, opportunities exist for sparkling nighttime city skyline pictures which include the light reflections from buildings in the waters of San Diego Bay. There are also numerous places in the downtown area where one can photograph the skyline - such as the Horton Plaza shopping center.
This is a wide angle view of San Diego Bay with the downtown skyline showing in the distance. It was taken on Harbor Island in August of 1997.
The building with the red and green circles on top is the Emerald Plaza Hotel. The circles are all green in color except during the Christmas holidays.

The downtown towers are seen from the Horton Plaza outdoor shopping mall in San Diego. San Diego city skyline pictures (and skyline pictures in general) always end up as unique and unrepeatable images due to the changing light and weather patterns and the many different cloud formations which occur moment by moment. This means that the opportunity is always available for anyone to record a truly memorable image of the downtown towers. Learning to capture special images with a camera (especially photographs in tricky lighting situations such as nighttime city skyline pictures) is made much easier when you have a guide to follow and work from. A book by Bryan Peterson entitled "Understanding Exposure" helped improve my photography skills tenfold. It is available at most bookstores. The San Diego skyline may not be the tallest in North America, but it is definitely one of the most unique and is admired by many.
