A late afternoon view of the San Francisco skyline as seen from Yerba Buena Island. The San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge can be seen at left.
The core of downtown San Francisco features lots of tall buildings which are tightly packed together. In fact, San Francisco is the second most densely populated city in the United States after New York City.
A city bus runs around the perimeter of the downtown core. In our brief time there, my wife and I tried to quickly visit several famous locations. Places such as Fisherman's Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Lombard Street. The list of San Francisco attractions is endless. I could easily spend a week there just photographing the city architecture alone. The Transamerica Pyramid building in the financial district is one of the most distinctive looking towers in the world. It is also the tallest tower in the city of San Francisco at 853 feet high (although that will soon change - there are currently six proposed towers in the works which will range from 900 to 1,200 feet in height).

This is me back in 1990 standing in front of the Golden Gate Bridge. The city occupies very hilly terrain along the northern coast of California and enjoys some of the coolest summertime temperatures in the country. It is a challenge to drive a car in the city due to all of the hills (plus the traffic). There are more than 50 hills within the city limits. The first time we drove through there, I was driving a manual transmission car making things even more difficult. But the city of San Francisco is a fun place to explore. And you don't need to have a car to get around the city. The world famous cable cars still run up and down the hilly streets. There is also an underground subway system called BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and there is a trolley system.

Looking up at some of the buildings in the financial district of the city. The city of San Francisco is not very far from the city of Sacramento. Both cities have their own unique flavor. And both were established in the mid 1800's and grew very quickly during the California gold rush days. Both cities also lean heavily left politically (much more so than most U.S. cities). So I don't plan to move to either one anytime soon. It is also quite expensive to live in the bay area as well. However, it is easy to see why the city of San Francisco is always listed as one of the top ten travel destinations in America. The multitude of interesting San Francisco attractions make it an inviting place for visitors. This is especially true for photographers.
