The city of Sacramento
is the capital of California.

As the seat of everything political in the state, the city of Sacramento, California has grown quite large over the years. Population of the city proper is 486,000 but the surrounding metropolitan area has grown to approximately 2.5 million people. That makes Sacramento the fourth largest metropolitan area in the state (after Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco). It is located in northern California along the Sacramento and American rivers. The city spreads out for 30 miles or so east of the Sacramento River.

downtown area features lots of tall trees and green vegetation.

The city of Sacramento was a major distribution center during the California gold rush days of the mid 1800's. A number of historic buildings from that period have been preserved in Old Sacramento near the downtown area. The beautiful and wide Sacramento River runs right alongside Old Sacramento. Many people also visit the city to see the State Capitol Building. Both of these attractions help to boost the Sacramento tourism industry.

Another unique modern tower in downtown Sacramento. Since these photos were taken, there are several more tall buildings which have sprouted up.

Interstate 80 runs through the city of Sacramento as does Interstate 5. The I-80 freeway heads west to San Francisco and east to Reno, Nevada. The I-5 freeway is the main north/south route through the state of California. There are two scenic California lakes within range of Sacramento residents. Lake Shasta to the north and Lake Tahoe to the east. You can capture some beautiful scenery pictures at either of these photogenic locations.

Lake Tahoe is a scenic gem located on the eastern border
between California and Nevada. I hope to spend some time
there one of these days.

Sacramento tourism will continue to grow as the city continues to expand. New skyscrapers have gone up in the city since the photos on this page were taken. It is definitely worth it to spend some time in this part of the state.
