A visit to the city of Portland, Oregon definitely gives one the strong impression that this place wants to blend in with its environment as much as possible. And that is not an easy thing to do in a city of Portland's size. Approximately two million people live in the greater metropolitan area which places Portland 23rd on the list of most populated metro areas in the United States.
Many hillside residents have a great view of the downtown Portland skyline. Many of the hills around the city of Portland, Oregon offer tremendous views of the downtown skyline. City skyline pictures can be photographed from several vantage points.
The view of downtown (on a clear day) often includes the majestic peak of Mount Hood in the distant background. Unfortunately, it has always been overcast when I have visited this city.
The Willamette River winds its way through the center of the city. Washington Park is a popular destination within the city limits of Portland. The Oregon Zoo is located here and also the International Rose Test Garden. Another popular destination is the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) which features an OMNIMAX theater. Powell's Bookstore is located in downtown Portland and bills itself as the largest independent bookstore in the United States. The Port of Portland is very busy year-round and is the third largest port on the west coast.

Getting around the city of Portland, Oregon is fast and easy utilizing the MAX light rail trolley system. MAX stands for Metropolitan Area Express and it links downtown Portland with its many suburbs (I have ridden it and enjoyed the experience).

Portland is known as the "City of Roses" and features a yearly parade during the Portland Rose Festival each June. It is definitely one of the most unique and visually appealing large cities in the United States.
