Color abounds at the Carlsbad flower fields.
Originally planted in 1965, the Carlsbad flower fields now attract more than 125,000 visitors per year (all of them between the months of March and May). Motorists on Interstate 5 get treated to a dazzling display of color each spring as they travel through coastal Carlsbad. Photographers will not find a better location for capturing beautiful flower pictures in all of California. It is truly a one-of-a-kind spot. The hillside comes alive each spring with rows of varying colors. Yellow, pink, white, red and even a row of multi-colored flowers adorn the landscape.

A group of auto dealerships called "Car Country Carlsbad" is seen in the distance beyond the flower fields.
The Frazee family began planting Ranunculus and Gladiolus flowers in Oceanside back in the early 1930's. Edwin Frazee moved that operation a short distance south in 1965 and the spectacular field of flowers survives to this day. The flower pictures shown on this page were taken back in the 1990's. I believe that the admission price back then to enter the grounds and take photographs was only $2 per person. It is a bit more than that now, but it is definitely worth a stop if you want to create some flower photography masterpieces.
Visitors can explore the flower fields along marked pathways.
The variation of color along the pathways is breathtaking.

Colorful landscape photos are certainly not difficult to obtain at the Carlsbad flower fields. However, the time frame window is a short one. The flowers are at their peak from late March until early May. After that, you must wait until the following year to have another opportunity to see them. So get your camera ready and plan to make a springtime trip to this beautiful Southern California hillside.
Rows and rows of vibrant color cover the hillside in Carlsbad.
Red is the dominant color of these Ranunculus flowers in this row.
